As first responders, fire fighters have a close-up view of the immediate impact of burns in their line of duty. Serious burns cause lasting physical injury and can also leave psychological scars. Recovery from such burns can take months or even years and frequently involves a multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, physiotherapists and other health care workers. It’s often a long and painful road. Burn survivors and their families need support through this difficult journey back to health and wellness.
The Abbotsford Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund is a charity dedicated to assisting Fraser Valley burn survivors in their rehabilitation and recovery. Through this fund, people affected by burns receive financial assistance to help cover the costs of their treatments and rehabilitation. These costs may include travel expenses, Jobst garments (specialized compression garments to reduce scarring), counselling and many other aspects of burn treatment.
In the past, Abbotsford Fire Fighters have used their annual ”Boot Drive” to collect money for the Burn Fund. In 2009 they started a new annual fundraiser in the form of an adventure race: The 3 Alarm Adventure Race. This year the 4th annual race is to be held on Sunday May 13, 2012, once again in the “side-country” of Abbotsford, B.C. The race’s theme, “Heal the Burn”, expresses the goal of its organizers who are keen to do everything possible to raise money for this important cause. All proceeds from the race go towards the Abbotsford Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. Consider getting involved: enter the race, volunteer to help on race day or donate to the Burn Fund and together we can help “Heal the Burn”.
